Opening of the 47th edition

Prix de Lausanne

International ballet competition – Beaulieu Theater

Lausanne, February 4th, 2019: the 47th edition of the international ballet competition starts today at the Beaulieu Theater. This year, 75 young dancers from 19 different countries participate in the competition. The Finals will take place on Saturday February 9th, 2019.
The 75 participants of the 47th Prix de Lausanne will spend the week developing their skills and rehearsing their classical and contemporary variations, under the direction of renowned teachers and coaches. On Friday, they will perform in front of the nine jury members in order to be selected for the Finals. This year, the daily live streaming time has tripled, with almost 6 hours live per day, broadcast on ARTE Concert as well as on the Prix de Lausanne’s website. As for the Selections and the Finals, they will be live streamed in their entirety.
Just as in 2018, the audience will be able to support the young dancer of their choice by donating through our online crowdfunding campaign and voting for their favourite Finalist. The amount raised will be shared by the Audience Favourite Prize Winner and the Web Audience Favourite Prize Winner and will help them join the school or company of their choice.

Kathryn Bradney,
Artistic and Executive Director
"I am thrilled about the beginning of this exhilarating week, full of young dancers brimming with exceptional talent! There will be a palpable excitement in the air as each candidate will dance in front of the extraordinary jury made up of international ballet stars and directors. This year’s President of the Jury is Carlos Acosta who won the Prix de Lausanne gold medal in 1990 and continued to pursue a prodigious international dance career. This coming week promises to be a unique experience for everyone!”

2019 Life Time Achievement Award
After the Finals, the Prix de Lausanne will honour Marcia Haydée with the 2019 Life Time Achievement Award. Born in Niteroi/Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Marcia Haydée inspired many great choreographers, such as John Cranko, Maurice Béjart and John Neumeier. She was Director of the Stuttgart Ballet from 1975 until 1996 and also Director of the Santiago Ballet de Chile from 1992 until 1995. Since 2004, she is once again the company’s director. The legendary ballerina, who has danced on all major stages worldwide and who has been hailed by critics around the world, will be present in Lausanne for this 47th edition.
